April 5 - 7:00 PM - Paxton Presbyterian Church, 3500 Sharon Street.

Stephen Russell will speak on "Thaddeus Stevens and Jonathan Blanchard and their impact on the Anti-slavery movement in Pennsylvania."

During 1837 in Harrisburg there was a unique merging of abolition forces.  The American abolition movement was actually a number of movements that converged to change the spiritual, political and economic landscape in America as the practice of slavery was prohibited and the concept of equality was considered.  In 1837, Harrisburg became the focal point for a unique convergence of two of these abolition movements.

Thaddeus Stevens, a growing force for the political abolition movement, was becoming more vocal regarding his anti-slavery sentiments, and Jonathan Blanchard, a new force for the theological abolition movement, was assigned by the American Anti-Slavery Society to focus on Pennsylvania, launching local anti-slavery chapters and organizing an anti-slavery convention in the state.

When these two men met, Blanchard encouraged Stevens to be more vocal and more direct with his anti-slavery position.  Stevens provided Blanchard with political support and entry into local gatherings so Blanchard could present his position.

Together the two men created more energy and activity for the Pennsylvania anti-slavery effort than each would have accomplished on their own.  The Harrisburg Anti-Slavery Convention in January 1837 and the Pennsylvania State Constitutional Convention in May 1837 were both deeply impacted by the influence of these two men.

In his PHS presentation, Stephen Russell will discuss Thaddeus Stevens and the “Definition Years” of his life. In addition, he will discuss Jonathan Blanchard and his role in the Theological Abolition Movement.  Their combined activities will be placed in historical context to demonstrate the amazing convergence of their efforts.
